{"id":68481,"date":"2015-06-16T05:22:26","date_gmt":"2015-06-16T05:22:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.freeburmarangers.org\/?p=60974"},"modified":"2015-06-16T08:18:34","modified_gmt":"2015-06-16T08:18:34","slug":"major-conflict-ongoing-in-northern-burma-reported-military-actions-by-the-burma-army-in-kachin-and-northern-shan-states-aprilmay-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/my\/2015\/06\/16\/major-conflict-ongoing-in-northern-burma-reported-military-actions-by-the-burma-army-in-kachin-and-northern-shan-states-aprilmay-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Major Conflict Ongoing in Northern Burma \u2013 Reported Military Actions by the Burma Army in Kachin and Northern Shan States April\/May 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 lang=\"zxx\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Major Conflict Ongoing in Northern Burma \u2013 Reported Military Actions by the Burma Army in Kachin and Northern Shan States April\/May 2015<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n<address lang=\"zxx\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span>Kachin and Shan States, Northern Burma<\/span><\/span><\/address>\n<address lang=\"zxx\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span>16 June 2015<\/span><\/span><\/address>\n<address lang=\"zxx\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/06\/16\/major-conflict-ongoing-in-northern-burma-reported-military-actions-by-the-burma-army-in-kachin-and-northern-shan-states-aprilmay-2015\/map-fbr-003\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60975\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-60975 alignnone\" title=\"Map Manje Township, northern Shan State and Kokang Region\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Map-FBR-003-723x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"723\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Despite talks of a ceasefire, heavy and escalating fighting has been occurring throughout Northern Burma in the last two months. \u00a0This report is a summary of this fighting; a more detailed\u00a0daily analysis of events is available on request.\u00a0Because this report uses only FBR reports and not those of\u00a0other sources,\u00a0it\u00a0does\u00a0not represent a totality of events; actual totals\u00a0may be\u00a0much higher.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"zxx\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">This period has seen a major escalation in conflict with heavy fighting occuring in the Kokang region, Northern Shan State, between the Burma Army and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army&#8217;s (MNDAA). The Burma Army has increased its troop levels in the region and has engaged in major military operations, including the use of tanks and heavy artillery barrages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"zxx\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">May has also seen a marked escalation in aggression by the Burma Army against the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) notionally on the the pretext of stopping illegal logging, but there has been heavy use of artillery and multiple airstrikes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"zxx\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">There has also been an increase in violence between the Ta&#8217;ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the Burma Army in northern Shan and southern Kachin States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"zxx\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Our teams alone have reported that in this period:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"zxx\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Burma Army soldiers casualties in this period \u2013 at least 111 dead, hundreds wounded.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"zxx\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Military Engagements \u2013 127.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"zxx\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Ethnic soldiers killed \/ wounded \u2013 10 \/ 5.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"zxx\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Three Burma Army armored vehicles knocked out during fighting in the Kokang region, Northern Shan State. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"zxx\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Thousands of troops have been observed actively operating in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"zxx\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">An attempted rape by Burma Army soldier on the 13<sup>th<\/sup> of April.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"zxx\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\">One civilian killed by landmine. In addition, there are reports of the Burma Army laying landmines and ordering civilians to blame ethnic forces.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"zxx\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\">Heavy use of airstrikes by the Burma Army against <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/04\/28\/burma-air-force-destroys-timber-trucks-in-order-to-gain-timber-monopoly-in-kachin-state\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">civilian targets<\/span><\/a><\/span> and the<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/05\/22\/fbr-ranger-injured-by-burma-army-mortar-fire-and-heavy-airstrikes-on-kachin-positions-photographed\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Kachin<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"zxx\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\">Muliple cases of Burma Army troops <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/05\/05\/two-civilians-killed-and-another-seriously-injured-by-burma-army-in-three-separate-incidents-large-drugs-haul-recovered-from-burma-army-position\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">murdering civilians<\/span><\/a><\/span>, including a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/04\/24\/report-on-murder-of-103-year-old-mother-and-son-by-burma-army-soldiers\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">103-year old woman<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p lang=\"zxx\" align=\"left\">In additon to the casualties sustained in the April\/May period during clashes that occurred between the 21<sup>st<\/sup> and 28<sup>th<\/sup> of March in which the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) defended against attacks by Burma Army troops around Madangyang, Mahtet, Du Hku and 29-Mile and 30-Mile the following senior Burma Army officers are reported to have been killed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"zxx\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\">Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 317 Commander Lieutenant Colonel San Myu Win<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"zxx\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\">Infantry Battalion (IB) 387 Captain Kyaw Moe Naing <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"zxx\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\">IB 10 Intelligence Officer Captain Pyi Hpyu Aung<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p lang=\"zxx\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\">Also, at least 63 other Burma Army soldiers were injured in this period including LIB 415 Commander Lieutenant Colonel Win Zaw Lin, who is reported to have sustained serious injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"zxx\">The assaults were part of a Burma Army operation to secure a route to provide access to Kaihtik from Manje.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61022\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 609px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/06\/16\/major-conflict-ongoing-in-northern-burma-reported-military-actions-by-the-burma-army-in-kachin-and-northern-shan-states-aprilmay-2015\/southern-kachin-map-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-61022\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61022\" title=\"Southern Kachin Map\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Southern-Kachin-Map3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"609\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Map of the Conflict Zone, Southern Kachin State.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p lang=\"zxx\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span>Thank you and God bless.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"zxx\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;
