{"id":68319,"date":"2015-03-26T14:43:31","date_gmt":"2015-03-26T14:43:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.freeburmarangers.org\/?p=60519"},"modified":"2015-07-08T14:08:13","modified_gmt":"2015-07-08T14:08:13","slug":"graduation-report-free-burma-rangers-welcomes-18-new-ranger-medics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/my\/2015\/03\/26\/graduation-report-free-burma-rangers-welcomes-18-new-ranger-medics\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduation Report &#8211; Free Burma Rangers Welcomes 18 New Ranger Medics"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Graduation Report &#8211; Free Burma Rangers Welcomes 18 New Ranger Medics<\/h1>\n<address>26 March 2015<\/address>\n<address>Karen State, Burma<\/address>\n<h2><strong>A report from Free Burma Ranger\u2019s Jungle School of Medicine \u2013 Kawthoolei (JSMK)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On 6 February 2015 Free Burma Rangers (FBR) and the Jungle School of Medicine \u2013 Kawthoolei (JSMK) congratulated 18 newly-graduated medics.\u00a0 The day of graduation was an energetic day with plentiful smiles and buzzing conversation.\u00a0\u00a0The medics were called one at a time in front of their leaders and peers to be awarded the certificate they had worked the last 18 months for: the certificate recognizing them as a medic.<\/p>\n<p>The student\u2019s training began with FBR\u2019s basic training in September 2013.\u00a0\u00a0Upon completing ranger training a ceremony was held in mid-December and was followed by the ranger teams&#8217; first mission, in which\u00a0they were accompanied by senior medics from\u00a0JSMK.\u00a0\u00a0The mission lasted until the end of January and it was in February that the rangers and students sent by Karen Department of Health and Welfare (KDHW) began their\u00a0formal medical training.<\/p>\n<p>JSMK\u00a0medic training begins with foundation courses in math, anatomy and physiology, and English in order to ensure the students have the basic knowledge they need for further\u00a0medical study.\u00a0\u00a0Many village in the\u00a0ethnic\u00a0areas in Burma do not have capacity to provide education past 6th grade, so these courses have enormous\u00a0importance\u00a0for\u00a0the medical training of the students.<\/p>\n<p>After the foundations course, the next eight months\u00a0are comprised of a daily lecture in advanced medical practices and treatment of patients in the clinic.\u00a0\u00a0This period of time provides a hands-on learning approach which solidifies the practical skills students learn both in the clinic and in the classroom.\u00a0\u00a0With this new knowledge the students then depart on their second FBR mission, this time as advanced students helping senior medics treat villagers.<\/p>\n<p>Following the mission the advanced students returned to\u00a0JSMK\u00a0for a one month review of their training.\u00a0\u00a0The final exam is an extensive written exam challenging their adeptness\u00a0in thinking of solutions to the medical problems they might encounter in the jungle.\u00a0\u00a0With much study and frequent prayer on the part of\u00a0the nervous student body,\u00a0JSMK\u00a0and FBR were happy to announce that all the medics passed their exams.<\/p>\n<p>After the graduation ceremony most of the medics return home to their villages where they will assist in local clinics and join their\u00a0FBR teammates on missions.\u00a0\u00a0Some of the medics will stay on as second year students at\u00a0JSMK\u00a0to receive further education and practical experience.\u00a0\u00a0Medics have tremendous value in the jungle and in villages where medical care\u00a0is minimal or far away.
