{"id":68205,"date":"2015-02-04T03:14:11","date_gmt":"2015-02-04T03:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.freeburmarangers.org\/?p=60331"},"modified":"2015-02-04T03:14:11","modified_gmt":"2015-02-04T03:14:11","slug":"seven-villagers-tortured-and-killed-by-burma-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/my\/2015\/02\/04\/seven-villagers-tortured-and-killed-by-burma-army\/","title":{"rendered":"SEVEN VILLAGERS TORTURED AND KILLED BY BURMA ARMY"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Seven Villagers Tortured and Killed by Burma Army<\/h1>\n<address>\u00a04<span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">\u00a0February 2015<\/span><\/address>\n<address>Kachin State, Burma<\/address>\n<p>The following is evidence gathered by the Free Burma Rangers in the cases of\u00a0seven villagers tortured and killed by soldiers of the Burma Army in Nam Lim\u00a0Pa and Mung Ding Pa villages, Kachin State, Burma, during an attack that began on\u00a017 November 2013.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60338\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 277px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/02\/04\/seven-villagers-tortured-and-killed-by-burma-army\/ngam-dau-captured-and-beaten-by-burma-army\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60338\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-60338  \" title=\"N'Gam Dau, captured and beaten by Burma Army\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/NGam-Dau-captured-and-beaten-by-Burma-Army.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"369\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em>N&#8217;Gam Dau, captured and beaten by Burma Army.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On 17 November 2013, the Burma Army attacked Nam Lim Pa Village and Mung Ding Pa Village, first with mortar fire, then machine gun\u00a0and infantry assault. They looted the villages and burned homes as well as\u00a0damaging the churches. Most of the villagers fled but nine were captured; of\u00a0these, one man was beaten and tied up but escaped and one was a grandmother\u00a0who was robbed and her animals killed but she survived.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60339\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 307px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/02\/04\/seven-villagers-tortured-and-killed-by-burma-army\/rangers-bury-torture-victims-30-jan-2014-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60339\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-60339 \" title=\"Rangers bury torture victims 30 Jan 2014\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Rangers-bury-torture-victims-30-Jan-2014.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"307\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em>Rangers bury torture victims 30 Jan 2014.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Their eyewitness\u00a0accounts along with those in hiding and the families of the villagers who\u00a0later found the bodies (six were found, two are still missing) provide the information in this report. Of the seven villagers tortured to death FBR\u00a0found five of the bodies. Three of the bodies were examined and photographed\u00a0and the details below cover these three victims.<\/p>\n<p>The seven killed were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Brang Aung\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">La PaiNaw\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">La Pai Du Naw\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">La Bang La Ring\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Brang Sang<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Poi Kham\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Kya<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">A man known to us as Sa Dwe (Uncle)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/02\/04\/seven-villagers-tortured-and-killed-by-burma-army\/remains-of-one-of-seven-villagers-tortured-to-death-nam-lim-pa-village\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60340\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-60340 alignnone\" title=\"Remains of one of seven villagers tortured to death, Nam Lim Pa Village.\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Remains-of-one-of-seven-villagers-tortured-to-death-Nam-Lim-Pa-Village.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This report includes forensic evidence discovered by FBR relief teams who\u00a0found the bodies two months after the killings, as well as written testimony\u00a0of family members of each of the victims.<\/p>\n<p>The families of the seven tortured to death have asked for justice and three\u00a0of the families appealed to the Government of Myanmar but there has been no\u00a0response.<\/p>\n<p>We were asked to help highlight these cases and to help bring justice for\u00a0these families and their loved ones who were brutally killed. Thank you for\u00a0caring for these people and helping work for justice in this case.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60341\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 448px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/02\/04\/seven-villagers-tortured-and-killed-by-burma-army\/remains-of-one-of-the-seven-torturd-to-death-by-burma-army-jan-30-2014-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60341\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-60341 \" title=\"Remains of one of the seven tortured to death by Burma Army Jan 30 2014.\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Remains-of-one-of-the-seven-torturd-to-death-by-Burma-Army-Jan-30-2014-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"315\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em>Remains of one of the seven tortured to death by Burma Army Jan 30 2014.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Original FBR Report:<br \/>\nBODIES OF TORTURED VICTIMS FOUND IN NAM LIM PA<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Nam Lim Pa Village, Kachin State, Burma:<\/strong> On 30 January, while conducting a\u00a0medical clinic and documenting evidence of the Burma Army&#8217;s recent attacks,\u00a0Free Burma Rangers relief teams found three bodies with evidence of torture.\u00a0All three were killed when the Burma Army attacked Nam Lim Pa and a\u00a0neighboring village in late November 2013 (see FBR report); a total of seven\u00a0people were killed in these November attacks, in Nam Lim Pa and nearby Mung\u00a0Ding Pa. Family members of the victims are spread between different IDP\u00a0sites, and some are in hiding near Nam Lim Pa.<\/p>\n<p>One of the victims was identified as La Bang La Ring (pictured in this\u00a0report); he was killed by the Burma Army in Nam Lim Pa and found by his\u00a0family on 2 January 2014 with six deep knife or axe cuts on his back, as\u00a0well as other signs of torture. La Bang La Ring was a deaf-mute.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60332\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 448px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/02\/04\/seven-villagers-tortured-and-killed-by-burma-army\/body-of-one-of-the-villagers-tortured-to-death-by-burma-army-in-nam-lim-pa\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60332\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-60332 \" title=\"Body of one of the villagers tortured to death by Burma Army in Nam Lim Pa. \" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Body-of-one-of-the-villagers-tortured-to-death-by-Burma-Army-in-Nam-Lim-Pa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em>Body of one of the villagers tortured to death by Burma Army in Nam Lim Pa.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The sister of Nhkun Brang Aung, one of the men tortured and killed by the\u00a0Burma Army in Nam Lim Pa on 17 November 2013, was able to provide details of\u00a0his death.\u00a0 Nhkun Brang Aung was 20 years old and mentally disabled. My name is Daw Aing Kwan Jar San.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Body discovered 31 December 2013 and reburied 30\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">January 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My brother, Mai Aing Khun Brang Aung, and I lived together with our mother,\u00a0Daw L&#8217;Byaw Gai Sang in Nam Lim Pa Village. We ran a shop. My brother had had\u00a0a stroke years ago because of a serious illness and his brain had been\u00a0affected so that he had to take medicine regularly.<\/p>\n<p>On 16 November 2013, at\u00a03:00pm, the Burma Army came to the village. When we\u00a0saw the entry of the Burma Army, we realized the fighting was going to break\u00a0out and ran away.<\/p>\n<p>When the rest of the family ran away, my brother told them, &#8220;I was not doing\u00a0anything against the government, so I don&#8217;t have any reason to run. And I\u00a0don&#8217;t want to run to the jungle, where I can&#8217;t take my medicine regularly.&#8221;\u00a0So he stayed behind in the house.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60337\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 512px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/02\/04\/seven-villagers-tortured-and-killed-by-burma-army\/mother-of-nhkun-brang-aung-at-his-gravesite\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60337\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-60337 \" title=\"Mother of Nhkun Brang Aung at his gravesite.\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Mother-of-Nhkun-Brang-Aung-at-his-gravesite.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em>Mother of Nhkun Brang Aung at his gravesite.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My mother and I fled to Na Lee Maw&#8217;s farm, seven miles away from the\u00a0village, and hid there. On 17 November 2013 we heard that fighting had\u00a0broken out in the village.<\/p>\n<p>On 31 December 2013, we heard that the Burma Army was no longer in the\u00a0village so we went back.\u00a0 We immediately started looking for our brother but\u00a0we couldn&#8217;t find him in the house.\u00a0 The whole house had been ransacked and\u00a0all the food supplies had been looted. The value of the looted items was\u00a0about 1,000,000 kyat.<\/p>\n<p>Since I didn&#8217;t find my brother in the house I went to the house of U La Sang\u00a0La, which is three doors from our house.\u00a0 I saw a suspicious pile of dirt in\u00a0the garden; we dug it up and saw my brother &#8211; he had been killed. When I saw\u00a0his body, I fell down unconscious.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence that proved it was my brother was as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Because of his stroke he often burned himself on the right side &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">the right side of this body had scarring from hot water also.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">We recognized the clothes he was wearing as his clothes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">The body was not completely decomposed yet because it was winter and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">the weather had been cold and dry &#8211; it was recognizable.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60336\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 461px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/02\/04\/seven-villagers-tortured-and-killed-by-burma-army\/interview-of-sister-of-nhkun-brang-aung\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60336\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-60336  \" title=\"Interview of sister of Nhkun Brang Aung.\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Interview-of-sister-of-Nhkun-Brang-Aung.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"461\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em>Interview of sister of Nhkun Brang Aung.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There was no one to witness the Burma Army&#8217;s killing of my brother because\u00a0only the Burma Army was in the village; but this itself proves that the\u00a0Burma Army killed him, because no one else was there to kill him. Some\u00a0documents belonging to the Burma Army were found in the area. Thus, from<br \/>\nthese two pieces of evidence I can say that the Burma Army killed my\u00a0brother.<\/p>\n<p>My brother&#8217;s right arm was cut off at the shoulder.\u00a0 The calf of his right\u00a0leg had been cut off. The documents they found near my brother&#8217;s body were\u00a0from Army 5059, Captain Kan Zaw, from the office of Company 2; also from Lt.\u00a0Kyaw Mo Khine, of Platoon 1, a one-star. And, finally, Lt. Thein Tun from\u00a0Platoon 2.<\/p>\n<p>Now I&#8217;m teaching children in La Nah ShoJa IDP camp. I have learned more\u00a0about human rights from the books that were sent to the camp by the NGO.\u00a0Instead of protecting the people, the Burma Army is torturing and killing\u00a0them. If they keep doing this the fighting in Kachin State will never end.<\/p>\n<p>We heard that according to the constitution of 2008, when the rights of the\u00a0citizen are violated there must be an investigation and the perpetrator must\u00a0be handed over to the proper government department. Therefore I appeal to\u00a0you to find out who is the perpetrator and also to have a professional\u00a0examine the body and I will volunteer to show the body of my brother.<\/p>\n<p><em>Signed: Daw Aing Kwan Jar San<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Wife of U La Pai Naw, last seen 17 November 2013, presumed dead.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am Daw Baw Sa Ma Dwang, from Nam Lim Pa Village, Mansi Township, Bhamo<br \/>\nDistrict in Kachin State.<\/p>\n<p>On 17 November 2013, my husband, U Lah Pai Naw, and I were working on the\u00a0farm. We had been there for so long that we had run out of rice, cooking\u00a0oil, and salt. At about\u00a07:00\u00a0my husband left for the village to buy the\u00a0needed cooking items. At\u00a09:00\u00a0I heard gunshots from the village and became<br \/>\nvery worried. My husband didn&#8217;t come back and I was afraid to go back to the\u00a0village. This lasted for days; almost every day gunshots came from the\u00a0village and I waited for my husband to return.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2014, the pastor, Kaw Aung, and church assistant, U Bowt Naw,\u00a0came to see me and bring me back to the village. My husband has never come\u00a0back, since that day. He is missing. When my husband went back to the\u00a0village, the Burma Army had already occupied it. The troops there were<br \/>\nheaded by Strategic Commander Myint Naing Oo. According to the villagers,\u00a0the troops stayed in the village a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. President U Thein Sein and Thu Ra Shwe Ma, chairman of Parliament, are\u00a0changing Burma now but the army is still disappearing, killing, the ethnic\u00a0nationalities, so we are far from peace. How can we bring the truth to them?\u00a0My husband had no contact with any organization; he was only a farmer. Now I\u00a0have no husband and it&#8217;s difficult for me to live.<\/p>\n<p><em>Signed: Daw Baw Sa Ma Dwang<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Father of La Bang La Ring, body found 3 January 2014 and reburied 30 January\u00a0<\/strong><strong>2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am La Bang La, father of La Bang La Ring, who was killed by the Burma\u00a0Army. I am from Nam Lim Pa Village of Mansi Township in Bhamo District. I\u00a0respectfully file this report.<\/p>\n<p>I had a son named La Bang La Ring (30 years old). My son was deaf and could\u00a0not speak. Although La Bang La Ring was deaf and couldn&#8217;t speak, his mind\u00a0was normal and he understood everything. He could communicate with sign\u00a0language very well. On 17 November 2013, the Burma Army came and attacked\u00a0Nam Lim Pa Village with heavy mortars and then came to the village.\u00a0 My\u00a0family ran away to the jungle, three furlongs from the village.<\/p>\n<p>La Bang La Ring didn&#8217;t run away because he was taking care of his livestock,\u00a0a pig. By 3 January 2014 we knew the Burma Army had left the village. As\u00a0soon as we knew they had left we returned to the village from our hiding\u00a0place in the jungle.<\/p>\n<p>We looked for La Bang La Ring but could not find him. We continued to look\u00a0for him and found something like a grave beside Palai Naw&#8217;s house. We dug it\u00a0up and there was a body; the body was a little bit decomposed but I knew it\u00a0was my son. The clothes on it were my son&#8217;s. We reburied him but didn&#8217;t have\u00a0much time as the Burma Army came back and we had to run to the jungle again.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60333\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 448px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2015\/02\/04\/seven-villagers-tortured-and-killed-by-burma-army\/father-of-deaf-mute-tortured-to-death-by-burma-amy-in-nam-lim-pa-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-60333\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-60333 \" title=\"Father of deaf mute tortured to death by Burma Amy in Nam Lim Pa.\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Father-of-deaf-mute-tortured-to-death-by-Burma-Amy-in-Nam-Lim-Pa-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em>Father of deaf mute tortured to death by Burma Amy in Nam Lim Pa.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were two witnesses of the Burma Army killing my son:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">U Htoi La&#8217;s wife (age 70, staying in Nam Lim Pa Village)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Daw Ja Bawt (age 40, Nam Lim Pa Village)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>They say my son was finding food for his pig and the Burma soldiers killed\u00a0and ate his pig. He was angry and confronted the soldiers; because he could\u00a0not speak or hear he gestured angrily at them and also had a slingshot. The\u00a0Burma soldiers tied his hands behind his back and poured boiling water on\u00a0his head and tortured him to death.<\/p>\n<p>The occupying battalion number was the 276th Infantry Battalion under the\u00a0command of Special Operations Bureau commander Myint Naing Oo.<\/p>\n<p>My family does farming and is not working with any organization. My son, La\u00a0Bang La Ring, who was deaf and could not speak, knew everyone and everyone\u00a0knew him. My family is very sad because my son was tortured to death.
