Over the years it has increased with both Burmese and Chinese companies coming into this area to mine ore. Primarily the mines in the\u00a0Maw\u00a0Chee\u00a0area extract tin.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61750\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 489px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2016\/02\/26\/maw-chee-mining-report\/maw-chee-mine-map\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-61750\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-61750 \" title=\"Maw Chee Mining site. \" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Maw-Chee-Mine-Map.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"489\" height=\"406\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em>Maw Chee Mining site.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When looking at\u00a0Maw\u00a0Chee\u00a0one can see scars all over the hill sides from where the mining operations have dumped debris and caused landslides. In October 2015, a large landslide killed 24 people when part of the mountain over\u00a0Maw\u00a0Chee\u00a0came loose and destroyed 38 houses. This landslide was not directly linked to any one mine, but was caused by heavy rains and roadways built along the hillside. Myint Aung Hlaing came by helicopter, and the Burma Army &#8211; along with many other organizations &#8211; came to provide relief for the victims of the landslide.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61729\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 553px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2016\/02\/26\/maw-chee-mining-report\/land-slide-that-killed-26-people\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-61729\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-61729  \" title=\"Landslide that killed 26 people.\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Land-slide-that-killed-26-people.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em>Landslide that killed 26 people.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One mine FBR visited is owned by a Chinese company named Ai Wa. It is positioned at N 18.85077<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>, E 097.13780<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>. This place used to be a village and a thick forest, and was purchased from a few individuals. Prior to this purchase, villagers in this area primarily grew cardamom. \u00a0Strip mining operations destroyed the village and livelihood for all who lived in the area. Around the mine, Karenni National Solidarity Organization (KNSO) troops, a Karenni armed group that became a Border Guard Force (BGF) under the Burma Army, secure the area. The stream that runs through the mine has now been polluted by the mining operation. While in the mine, FBR teams were able to witness many families &#8211; including small children &#8211; sifting through the mining debris to get tin ore.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61734\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 553px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2016\/02\/26\/maw-chee-mining-report\/ai-wa-mine\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-61734\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-61734  \" title=\"Ai Wa mine.\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Ai-Wa-mine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"415\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em>Ai Wa mine.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61735\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 553px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/2016\/02\/26\/maw-chee-mining-report\/ai-wa-strip-mining-operations\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-61735\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-61735  \" title=\"Ai Wa strip mining operations.\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.freeburmarangers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Ai-Wa-strip-mining-operations.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"415\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em>Ai Wa strip mining operations.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While in\u00a0Maw\u00a0Chee, FBR teams were also able to do reconnaissance on the Burma Army camps in the area under the command of Infantry Battalion (IB) 135. The Burma Army has four positions around\u00a0Maw\u00a0Chee. The villagers in this area live under the control of the Burma Army and their BGF counterparts. Yay Toh Kyaw Company is owned by one of the Burma Army leaders, named Yay Toh Htin, and is based in Loikaw. This company owns the mines inside of\u00a0Maw\u00a0Chee, which the Burma Army camps provide security for.
